Andrea Appiani was born in 1754 in Bossio near Milan, the son of a doctor. From 1769 he received training at the private Academy of Carlo Maria Gludici. This was followed by studies at the Art Academy Ambrosinia under the fresco painter Antonio de Giorgi. His skills in oil painting were perfected by Martin Keller.
